SCENES DE LA VIE CONJUGALE

Ingmar Bergman
Inspired by the 1973 television series, this intense, closed-door drama explores the subtle violence of intimate relationships and how this snapshot of a private relationship reveals the imbalances of the wider world. Johan, a psychology professor, and Marianne, a lawyer specialising in family law, see their lives turned upside down as their relationship is gradually laid bare, with love, power and words clashing.
By creating a dialogue between the private and the political, Scenes from a Marriage lays bare our deepest contradictions: those of a society where intimate domination reflects collective imbalances. A disturbing face-to-face encounter in which, behind the love, a deeper truth is revealed through the metamorphosis of the revolutionary character embodied by Marianne.
