1990, New York. Une étudiante en psychologie rend visite à Stanislaw, médecin à la retraite, pour en savoir plus sur son grand-père, Eugène, et sur ses actions pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale.
1940, Rozwadów, Pologne. Deux jeunes médecins, Eugène et Stanislaw, mettent au point un ingénieux stratagème pour berner les nazis et empêcher les déportations de tous les habitants menacés… Mais leur ruse ne tarde pas à éveiller les soupçons dans les rangs du IIIème Reich et les deux amis doivent rivaliser d’inventivité pour que le château de cartes qu’ils ont érigé ne s’écroule pas sur eux.
Dans cette histoire, qui oscille entre deux époques, se croisent une vingtaine de personnages pris dans les rouages fragiles d’une machination vertigineuse.

In this story, which moves back and forth between two eras, twenty or so characters are caught up in the fragile workings of a dizzying plot.
