LA SOURICIERE

Agatha CHRISTIE
The decor immediately sets the scene for the investigation to come: a remote inn, recently opened by a young couple, on a snowy day that forces guests to stop their taxis at the end of the road and carry their suitcases to the entrance. On the radio, the news reports a murder, and the suspect is described as wearing a dark coat, a light-colored scarf, and a felt hat: ordinary clothing, worn by all the guests upon their arrival. The snow is falling harder and harder when a detective arrives on skis: a map of the inn has been found at the crime scene with a note scribbled on it announcing more murders to come. Despite the precautions taken, a scream rings out and the atmosphere becomes tense when the lifeless body of Mrs. Boyle is discovered; fortunately, Detective Trotter takes charge.
